KARACHI - Two political workers were killed in the metropolis in separate incidents of violence on Saturday. The first incident took place at 7:45am when four armed men, on two motorbikes, opened fire on three friends sitting at Shamli Road within the limits of Nabi Bux police station. The culprits then easily fled from the scene. The victims were identified as 28-year-old Atiqur Rehman, son of Habibur Rehman, Shehzad, 35, son of Ahmed Baig and Junaid, 26, Afroze, who were immediately shifted to Civil Hospital, Karachi where Atiq succumbed to his injuries at 11am during treatment. Police officials termed the incident 'a target killing. Only Atiq was their target, said DSP Ejaz Hashmi. At first, they asked his name and then forced him to stop there and then they shot him. The deceased tried to save himself when he received a bullet injury onto his abdomen but then the assailants shot on his head, he added. Police officials were not aware of the actual cause of the incident. Hashmi further said that the victims were sitting at a 'pan cabin, owned by Junaid, where the incident took place. SHO Wasim Ahmed said the deceased and the injured were friends. Atiq was the city warden in the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) and Junaid was the employee of the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board. The deceased and injured were the workers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and were associated with the MQM Ranchore Line unit 34, he added. Moreover, 9mm pistol was used in the incident. The victim was said to be a father of two children. Meanwhile, tension gripped up Ramswami, Ranchore Line and its surrounding areas since the incident took place, especially during the burial occasion. He was laid to rest at Mewa Shah graveyard. No case was registered till the filing of this report. His family was busy in the burial process and they might nominate someone in the case, he added. Separately, one Asghar, 26, son of Aleem Din, was shot dead near UC-5 office, Urdu Nagar, in the limits of Saudabad police station. He received two bullet injuries of TT pistol on his head and died on the spot. DSP Farooq Sher Zaman confirmed the affiliation of the deceased with the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H). It was unclear that was he associated with MQM-H Afaq group or Amir Khans group but it was evident that he was the MQM-H worker, he added. The incident took place when the deceased was standing at his pushcart when the culprits target him, said the DSP. He was said to be the resident of Double Story area, Malir City. His body was taken to nearest private hospital from where his family took it away without any legal formality. Meanwhile, SHO Nabi Bux police station said that an FIR No 222/09 under Sections 302, 324, 34, 109 has been registered on behalf of injured Shehzad. The officer said the complainant in his recorded statement said, four MQM-H workers including Talat and Asim alias Shah Faisal Wala injured us on behest of MQM-H chairman Afaq Ahmed. It is pertinent to mention here that Afaq Ahmed was also nominated in the murder case of MQM worker who was killed in the first week of June.
