MIRPUR (AJK) - All is set for the scheduled June 26 elections for 49-seat AJK Legislative Assembly in a free, fair and transparent manner and the Azad Jammu & Kashmir election commission have completed all arrangements to this direction, it was officially declared. A spokesman for the AJK Election Commission said in a statement that since a short time is left in the polling to the scheduled June 26 elections, hundreds of complaints about the voters lists and polling schemes etc yet reached in the election commission can not be redressed - since the voters lists and the polling schemes were prepared and streamlined with the assistance of the staff of the AJK Revenue Department (Mahal department). The spokesman continued that the government had decided to engage the field staff including Patwaris of the Revenue department, instead of the staff of the Education Department, for the preparation of the voters lists for the scheduled June 26 general elections. The spokesman said that lot of mistakes or errors emerged after the fresh/updated voters lists were printed. Although these mistakes / errors, found in the voters lists, were got removed by the staff of the Revenue Department under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioners of the concerned district - but despite this exercise some errors were still prevailing in the electoral lists. The AJK EC spokesman further said that the AJK EC has no much staff who could get the voters lists fully rectified through getting the still-prevailing errors removed. The spokesman said that with the consent of the Chief Justice of AJK High Court, the AJK Election Commission appointed the judicial officers as Returning Officers for holding the elections. And Tehsildars of the Revenue Department were appointed as Assistant Returning Officers to assist the Returning Officers. The polling schemes have also been got prepared by the Revenue Department, the spokesman said adding that some complaints about these polling schemes have reached to the AJK Election Commission. In these complaints it has been pointed out that certain polling stations have been set up in far flung villages and certain female votes shall have to move for a long distance to use their right of vote in such far-away villages. The spokesman made it clear that the AJK Election Commission had no any role in preparation of voters lists and the polling schemes. These voters lists and the polling schemes were inked by the Revenue department staff. And since short time is left to the beginning of the polling, the complaints about some errors / mistakes in the voters lists and the polling schemes could not be redressed / removed, the spokesman added.
