KARACHI - Sunni Tehreek (ST) Pakistan has planned to submit a petition requesting the establishment of a judicial tribunal comprising apex court judges to investigate the Nishtar Park tragedy, sources revealed to The Nation on Friday. More than 56 people were killed in the incident in 2006. Sunni Tehreek has decided to file the petition after Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry assumes office tomorrow (Sunday). It may be mentioned here that leading ST leaders and scholars, including the party chief Abbas Qadri, Iftikhar Bhatti, Akram Qadri and others, were martyred in the Nishtar Park blast. Talking to the Nation, ST media coordinator , Faheemuddin Sheikh, confirmed that his party did not satisfy over investigation of the bloody incident and hoped that Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry would form a tribunal to probe the Nishtar Park blast. He further said that ST would formally submit a plea, requesting the CJP to form a three-member bench of the apex court judges for this purpose. He said that ST did not trust the PCO judges, including the incumbent CJP Abdul Hameed Dogar, therefore it had not filed any petition in the past for investigation of the Nishtar Park tragedy. "We want the arrest of real culprits involved in the incident and elements responsible for this heinous crime," Sheikh asserted. He hoped that, being an impartial person, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry would deal the case on merit and provide justice to the bereaved families. Expressing his dissatisfaction over the previous investigation, Sheikh said the tribunal formed by the former Sindh govt comprised a single judge who was also under intense pressure from the then rulers. It is worth mentioning here that former Sindh government had formed a tribunal to probe the Nishtar Park tragedy but the ST and some other parties expressed their dissatisfaction over its findings.
