SAHIWAL Provincial Secretary for Food Muhammad Irfan Elahi has said that Punjab government would procure as many as four million ton wheat this year, out of which, the target for the area was fixed as 0.482 million ton. Addressing a meeting held in commissioner office on Saturday to review the arrangements in connection with procurement campaign, he said that bags for procurement had been collected while at present, some 3.1m ton wheat was lying with food department, for its export, permission of federal govt was in the pipeline. He stated that keeping in view the experiment of previous year, the arrangements for distribution of bags had been made foolproof while discretionary powers of local food officers had been withdrawn. According to new arrangements, 8 bags per acre would be given to cultivators and at a time, more than 200 bags would not be delivered, while 50 bags would be provided on personal surety, he added. DD Food Khalid Mukhtar Gondal on the occasion told the meeting that quota for the area was 0.197 million tons, for Okara 0.18 million tons and for Pakpattan 0.105 million tons, for which 20, 14 and 8 procurement centres had been established respectively. He maintained that in Okara and Pakpattan, wheat would be procured by Passco and the bags would be provided at purchase centres. He said Food Department would charge Rs7 per bags to the growers. He directed the DCO to hire private godown, so that maximum wheat could be saved. At each purchase centre, equipment would be provided to check the moisture of wheat, to ensure for quality purchase of wheat, he added. He said food Department will per Rs 7 per bags as labour charges to the growers. He also directed to DCO to make arrangement to hire private godown, that maximum wheat be protected.
