LAHORE The Royal Palm Annual 2010 competitions in squash, tennis and swimming were held at the Royal Palm Club over five days and the finals concluded on Thursday. A total of 110 aspirants with strong urge for sports achievement took part in these events and as is the pattern in all such competitions, the slightly less skilled ones got weeded out either because of lack of temperament or stamina. The remarkable ones, however, made it to the final stage through superb application of the fundamentals. In squash, the finalists were Omer Salamat and Amir Shahid and in the conclusive match, in the presence of a packed house of squash enthusiasts, Amir Shahid surfaced as the club champion for 2010 beating Omer in a five setter 15-11, 15-13, 12-15, 11-15 and 15-6. Amir gave a good account of his reach and on a number of occasions stretched himself to retrieve virtual sitters and most of the time the rallies were long indeed. The tennis winner turned out to be Khurram Imam who excelled through his powerful serves and showed visible endurance and strength in his match against Hassan Daniyal. The final scores were 6-3,1-6 and 6-1. The top ones in the female swimming competitions turned out to be Hajra Sheikh (15-25 yrs), Kiran Aleem (26-35 yrs), Ayesha Saeed (above 35 yrs). Performers in the male section were Ali Hussain (15-25 yrs), Omer Amin Raja (26-35 yrs), Omer Zafarullah (36-45 yrs) and Sher Zaman (above 45 yrs). At the conclusion of the competitions, Omer Mir, General Manager, Royal Palm awarded prizes to winners in the presence of a large number of participants and parents.
