LAHORE - Speaking in the context of Prime Minister Gilani’s conviction by the Supreme Court, Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khosa on Sunday said that Parliament was the only institution in Pakistan which could elect a prime minister and send him packing.
Talking to a 10-member delegation of Bangladeshi journalists at Governor House, Khosa said that under the Constitution of Pakistan, a prime minister could only be removed by the Parliament through a no-confidence motion.
The governor said all institutions in the country including the Army and the judiciary were on the same page that democracy should not be de-railed, though some may have their reservations over continuation of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in his office after the Supreme Court decision.
“This is for the first time in country’s history that a democratic government has completed four-and-half years of its tenure”, he told the visiting delegation, adding that present government would complete its tenure.
Replying to a question, he said that Pakistan Peoples Party was of the firm belief that it could tackle even the most sensitive and difficult issues through mutual trust and understanding if democracy is allowed to stay here.
