Punjab Chief Minister Najam Sethi has said that maintenance of law and order and elimination of crime is the prime responsibility of police and it should perform its duties with commitment and dedication. He said that satisfactory law and order situation is necessary for promotion of foreign investment and economic activities.
He was addressing a meeting at Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Monday. Provincial Home Minister Tariq Pervaiz, Chief Secretary, Chairman Planning and Development, Inspector General Police Punjab, Secretaries Home, Finance, Excise & Taxation, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister and other concerned officers were present in the meeting.
The chief minister expressed his satisfaction over the overall security situation during general elections which enabled people exercise their right of franchise in a peaceful atmosphere. He said there was a need to benefit from modern technology for the capacity-building of police. He said many developed countries have controlled crime through the use of modern technology.
Sethi said the proposed project of installation of CCTV cameras requires long-term planning and police would have to move forward under a phased programme towards benefitting from modern technology. He also sought a report about the number of already installed CCTV cameras and their performance.
The chief minister said improvement of surveillance system can help foil the nefarious designs of anti-social elements beforehand. The meeting also reviewed law and order situation in the province while a briefing was given about the proposed project of installation of CCTV cameras in five big cities of the province.
