Punjab police have arrested the driver of an oil tanker for smuggling 32,000 liters of Iranian high speed diesel (HSD) and seized a car at Sakhi Sarwar checkpoint which is main entrance point for Punjab, 35km from here in Tuesday night.

Talking to The Nation, Sakhi Sarwar Station House Officer Liaqat Hussain said that on a tip-off, the police were alert at the check post of Sakhi Sarwar. As the oil tanker (GKW-734) coming from Balochistan reached the check post, the police impounded it, he said.

He added that accused driver Allah Dad, a resident of Khanozai, Balochistan, had been arrested with 32,000 HSD worth Rs3 million. During the investigation, it has been revealed that Allah Dad was involved in selling smuggled HSD and petrol in DG Khan district since a long. Iranian oil products are sold at petrol pumps of Baloch people in district D G Khan like Sada Bahar Petrol Pump.

According to financial experts, the sale of smuggled Iranian oil products and non customs paid vehicles are causing huge revenue losses to the national exchequer of about Rs60-70 million per day in Punjab. At present, there are more than 200 illegal open-shop petrol stations with dispensers and roadside outlets of oil products in Dera Ghazi Khan.

Liaquat said that the police had also detained the vehicle worth Rs1.5 million at Sakhi Sarwar check post. The driver of car had been arrested after registration of a case. Investigation and legal action against the accused were underway by the customs and civil defense officials.

Liaqat said that two days ago, Sakhi Sarwar police had also detained a pick-up van in the shape of ambulance.

On a question, a high rank police officer with condition of anonymity said that smuggling of Iranian POL products and non customs paid vehicles is going on for a few years due to corruption of border military police of DG Khan. With connivance of BMP officials, smugglers easily cross the check posts of BMP namely Bawata and Rakhi Ghaj. While Punjab police had detained the smugglers after crossing the BMP check posts at Sakhi Sarwar check post.
