Scores of protesters besieged the city police station Haroonabad and pelted it with stones as two persons were allegedly shot by the police at a picket while one of them died on the spot and another succumbed to injuries in a hospital here on Wednesday.

According to the police, a picket was installed at 50/4R  Gulab Ali Road where cops Ashraf ASI etc signalled three allegedly veiled bike riders to stop at the picket. However, it added, the bike riders sped away the picket and started firing at the police on which the the police started chasing them and retaliated. As a result, two of the bike riders fell down while third person Asif managed to escape.

The police found one of them dead and was identified as Ikram while Muhammad Ahmad was critically injured. The injured was shifted to a hospital in Haroonabad from where he was referred to Bahawalpur due to his critical condition. The police registered a case against three accused.

However, the family of the accused rejected the police story, and said that the victims were innocent and had no criminal record. They did not stop at the picket as Ikram was suffering from appendix pain, and Ahmad and Asif were shifting him to a hospital, their relatives claimed.

“ASI Ashraf who had grudge against the victims opened fire at them from the back. As a result, Ikram expired on the spot and Ahmad sustained critical injuries,” they alleged.

As a result, the death of Ikram ignited massive protest against the police. Scores of the people assembled outside the city police station Haroonabad and staged a demonstration.

The demonstrators besieged the police station and pelted the cops with stones. As a result, three cops sustained injuries. Police also resorted to baton-charge and forced the protesters to disperse.

However, the main roads of Haroonabad remained blocked for several hours. DPO Muntazir Mehdi rushed to Haroonabad and started probing the incident. Meanwhile, a source told that injured Ahmad also breathed his last at Bahawal Victoria Hospital Bahawalpur.

Meanwhile, 43 protesters were booked over ransacking public properties and the police station.

On the complaint of ASI Mushtaq, the case was registered in the aftermath of the violent demonstration. The FIR said that 43 demonstrators Nasir etc ransacked the van of citizen Iftikhar. The demonstrators also damage the pushcart and juicer of vendor Yasin; broke the windowpanes of Amin and also caused damage to the shops of Akram and Nadeem.
