ISLAMABAD Massive irregularities were committed in the notorious deal of some 35-bulletproof Mercedes cars during the dictatorial rule of former president Pervez Musharraf, reliable sources confided to TheNation. The sources informed that former prime minister Shaukat Aziz had finalised a deal of importing bulletproof vehicles with a Japanese company. 7 bulletproof Mercedes cars amounting to Rs. 350 million, and then even more expensive 28 Mercedes cars were imported from Japan, without devising any appropriate strategy regarding the purchase, for the use of the President and PM of a country already in a horrible economic crisis due to unemployment, poverty and foreign loans. Once the vehicles were imported, to check the quality of these vehicles in the presence of Shaukat Aziz and Pervez Musharraf a security official was asked to fire at the windscreen of all seven Mercedes and the said official fired at the vehicles with the help of his Short Machine Gun (SMG), however, it was proved that bullets could not be pierced but it cracked the pain of the vehicles, sources informed, adding that after that strange exercise all 7 vehicles were distributed among the Ministers. Interestingly, after the payment of the hefty amount from national exchequer another problem with these vehicles was found as they could not run smoothly due to heavy weight, it was held. Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira is also using one of those 7 vehicles, which was earlier used by Senate Chairman Mian Muhammad Soomro and Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad, the sources said. It was another chunk for the national exchequer when irrationally, 28 more Mercedes cars were imported to save the lives of the President and PM (two close friends) while leaving the 170 million people of the country to the mercy of God. It is relevant to mention here that despite the passage of two years, the incumbent rulers did not dare to initiate an inquiry into the matter that damaged the economy of Pakistan to a great extent. Presently, 13 Mercedes are in the use of the Presidency while the remaining 15 are being used by the PM Secretariat. Of the earlier imported seven Mercedes cars, Ministers are using five, and two are not being used and are parked at some unknown location, the sources informed. Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira, when contacted, confirmed that the deal was made during Musharrafs rule and himself being a focal person in the war against terrorism was using one of those bulletproof vehicles. To a query, he said that those vehicles are now in the pool of the government. Responding to another question, Kaira said that he was not clear regarding the exact number of vehicles and details of the said deal, adding that he was the only Minister who was using a bulletproof car. Despite numerous attempts, close aides of Pervez Musharraf and Shaukat Aziz could not be available for comments.
