LAHORE - The open courts held by the top bosses of police department have almost closed down as people have stopped visiting these venues terming it a futile exercises due to their inability to redress public grievances. Moreover police officials are hesitant to attend these open courts on the pretext of security threats. The security officers deployed on the security points outside the offices of top officers are kicking the people who are forced to visit the venues due to their daily problems. The people either have been compelled to stop visiting the venues after getting disappointed by the attitude of security personnel and considering their visits as futile exercises due to the failure of high wigs to redress the grievances of the complainants. A large number of applicants are seen often kicked by the officers deployed at the security points outside the offices of top cops including SSP (Operation) office at Outfall Road near Islamia College Civil Lines, CCPO office at Queens Road and other offices of six SPs of Lahore Division in various areas of the City. The complainants also expressed their grief over the officers act to avoid holding open sittings even in their offices due to security reasons. Almost all the officials have erected huge barricades in front of their offices. A few among them include CCPO Pervez Rathore and SSP Operation Ch Shafique Ahmad who have decided to erect eight feet high wall by dividing the two lanes roads into single lane. The ill-fated publics, who often forced to exchange harsh words with the officers deployed there while visiting their office owing to their problems. The masses are confronting bitter situation these days due to the various tactics used by the officers deployed at the security points. All these officers had been holding open courts from the last several months, which were receiving huge response and was being considered a major step of the Punjab government. These open courts were being held on different days of the week with rhetoric to address the daily problems of people by hearing their complaints and issuing on the spot directions to the authorities concerned. An official from Law Department, however, disclosed that the step of withholding such open courts of big wigs was taken in a high level meeting on the reports of security agencies. The courts will be opened on the pointing of the intelligence agencies as soon as possible, the official further added. The spokesman of IGP, Malik Munir, said the public have been requested many times to bring their national identity cards while visiting the top officials offices but still they are not understanding the situation. Moreover it was also learnt from public that none of the officials of department concerned or Police Station concerned bother to pay heed to the top cops orders. Since the erection of barricades in front of such offices, the people have lost their faith and stopped visiting the open courts. Though CCPO, SSP, SPs and other officials had to face an embarrassing situation when widely publicised open courts would attract only two or three applicants. In fact such police attitude toward public attributed to a growing feeling among the public that such 'courts are just a futile exercises, having little to do with solution of the masses problems. That is why people prefer to stay away from such gatherings. It is my 3rd visit to SSP office but third time the security officers have ordered me to go back as I have forgotten to bring identity card, Karim Khan, resident of Sanda told to this scribe outside SSP office. He said, No doubt security was inevitable element but suspects are recognised at first glance. These officers also know that we are complainants nor terrorists but every time they send us back saying to come back with solid proof of identification. However IG Police Tariq Saleem Dogar despite security threats continuously holding open courts and public has appreciated his performance.
