Justin Trudeau: A premier breaking stereotypes

No matter which nation you belong to, or how liberal your government swears to be, there has never been a cabinet illustrating a 50:50 ratio of men and women

Earlier this month Canada’s 23rd Prime Minister was sworn into the office. Justin Trudeau born to an influential lineage is the son of Pierre Trudeau, who was the 15th Prime Minister of Canada. Senior Trudeau was quite popular and well accepted during his tenure.

Since sweeping the elections of 2015, junior Trudeau, the torchbearer of the newly restored liberal party, has managed to grab eyeballs from around the world – deservingly so. This premier is a heartthrob, owing to his secular movements and pluralistic approach to matters at hand. The fortunate citizens of Canada are in for a much needed change, and other countries’ envy. His share of popularity and acceptance is escalating gradually. His efforts to embrace and endorse secularism and diversity in faith are truly commendable.

This premier is not only a man of words; he talks the talk and walks the walk. His cabinet as he terms ‘Just like Canada’ epitomizes gender equality and multiculturalism. It’s the first of its kind around the world. Be it Bardish Chagger – an Indian immigrant; Kent Heir – whose paralyses never came in the way of being elected as the cabinet minister; Maryam Monsef – an Afghan immigrant  or Salma Zahid and Iqra Khalid of Pakistani origin, this man left no stone unturned to stay true to his words.

He has so far cemented the idea of a prime minister which multicultural nations vouch for. From sharing a meal with the Muslim community based in Canada to performing with the locals at an event organized by the Indian community, these advances towards peace and harmony have swept the web. After clean sweeping the elections, his early morning visit to the metro station in Montreal for expressing his gratitude in-person was exemplary. For our nation this was rather new!

This premier is void of any qualms in greeting former members of the rival party, and in interacting with the media or receiving media coverage on assuming the PM’s office. We’ve never come across anything like this in our part of the world. Our prime minister is so threatened by terrorists that he chooses to spend minimal time off his vehicle, let alone media interactions. Coming to our president, well, when was the last time we saw him?

In Pakistan, Imran Khan’s ever surging fame is compromised by this new man on the block. So far, he is not only as handsome according to the ladies, he is also quite sorted in his ways. His decision to withdraw forces from the deteriorating states of Syria and Iraq added to the positivity he exudes.

No matter which nation you belong to, or how liberal your government swears to be, there has never been a cabinet illustrating a 50:50 ratio of men and women. For this initiative, he has earned massive respect of women from every corner of the world. There have been anecdotes, stories on why gender equality is the need of the hour. Conversely, there has hardly been any movement, initiative which ensured gender equality to the fullest. This first step taken by Trudeau should go a long way on that particular front. Not sure, how consistent this positive change would be, but as of now he has set an example worth following. Trudeau-mania has just begun.
