UNITED NATIONS-Lieutenant General Sikander Afzal of Pakistan will head the UN peacekeeping mission in Liberia, a UN spokesperson said on Tuesday. Spokesperson Marie Okabe told the regular briefing that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has informed the Security Council of his intention to appoint Lt.Gen. Afzal as Force Commander of the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL). Gen. Afzal will replace Lieutenant General A.T.M. Zahirul Alam of Bangladesh whose duty ended on Monday. UNMIL comprises 11,500 uniformed personnel, including 10,046 troops and 139 military observers; 1,331 police; supported by 476 international civilian personnel, 975 local staff and 225 UN Volunteers. Established by the Security Councils 2003 resolution, the mission supports the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the peace process, protect UN staff, facilities and civilians, support humanitarian and human rights activities, as well as assist in national security reform, including national police training and formation of a new, restructured military.
