PESHAWAR - At least four policemen were killed when unidentified motorcyclists targeted a police picket in Peshawar on Sunday.

Police officials told The Nation that unknown assailants attacked the police checkpost on Dalazak Road in Pharipura area near Pakha Ghulam Village. Officials of Pharipura Police Station said that four attackers riding motorbikes sprayed bullets at the picket, killing all four policemen deployed there.

The deceased cops have been identified as Assistant Sub Inspectors (ASIs) Amin Khan and Fazal Wahab and constables Ayub Shah and Liaquat.

Meanwhile, angry crowds carrying bodies of the deceased policemen took to the streets and blocked GT Road in protest. The protesters along with relatives of the dead policemen were demanding swift arrest of the culprits behind the attack.

Nobody immediately claimed responsibility, but Taliban militants, who have been waging a bloody insurgency against the state, routinely target police and security forces.
