Rwalpindi - Police rounded up Dr Raja Mehmood, an active member of kidney trafficking racket during a raid yesterday.

The police also produced the doctor before a court of law and obtained his physical remand for further investigation, City Police Officer (CPO) Israr Ahmed Khan Abbasi disclosed this while talking to The Nation yesterday.

The CPO said that a special police team was formed to arrest the fleeing members of kidney stealing gang, including Dr Zahid Iqbal, the ringleader and owner of Kidney Centre Hospital Morgah, Dr Mukhtar Ahmed, Dr Tauseef Ahmed, Dr Raja Mehmood and cashier Laeeq under the surveillance of SP Saddar Circle. He said the police team on a tip off raided a place and held Dr Raja Mehmood and shifted him to Rawat police station. He said the accused doctor was presented before a court of law for obtaining physical remand for further probe. He said that police intensified manhunt for other fleeing members of kidney smuggling gang and would arrest them soon. To a query, he said police on orders of Magistrate Chaudhry Waqar Masnoor Baryar have formally sealed Kidney Centre Hospital Morgah. He said the court completed its process of recording statements of 24 people, including four women, who were recovered by police during a raid in a plaza located at a private housing society. He said the court could not take up post arrest bail pleas of the four accused and had deferred the hearing.

A source disclosed that the court postponed the hearing in the post arrest bails of the four accused because police failed to submit the case record.
