OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE The authorities of the Camp Jail are all set to save the skin of Sheikh Afzal, the chief accused of the Bank of Punjab (BoP) loan scam and owner of Haris Steel Mills, who attempted to escape via mini Mazda truck on Monday. Sources privy to the development told this scribe that the issue is being hushed up from top to bottom as no inquiry committee was constituted to probe into the matter by the Prisons Department or at the government level. The Camp Jail authorities are trying to turn the public as well as authorities attention with rumours of his escape, they said, adding he (Sheikh) is a very sharp person. Sources in Elite Force also said the accused always used to offer handsome money as bribe to the robkar-officers (police officers who produce him before the court). I swear Almighty Allah, he had offered me a bribe Rs 1,000 but I along with my other colleagues of Elite Force strongly rejected his offer, an informed elite force personnel said. To a query, he said Sheikh Afzal is habitual of giving 'gifts to all the police officers, attached with him, either for security purpose or routine wise duties. He, however, refused to comment episode, which reportedly, the big fish has executed by 'hiring the services of the entire shift of the prison police. According to the sources, the accused tried to flee by hiding himself in a mini Mazda truck, which brought ice to the jail. He hired a senior officer of the jail by promising to reward him with millions of rupees in case he succeeds in escaping from the Camp Jail, they added. Afzal is on judicial remand in the Camp Jail. Earlier, he hid himself in small lower portion of the truck to cross the main gate of the jail but when the accused was about to cross the main entrance, a police constable started making noise and foiled his escape.
