ISLAMABAD - Chairman of his own faction of Pakistan Peoples Party and one of the key players in the Afghan peace process, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, has expressed deep shock over the assassination of former president and chief of High Peace Council of Afghanistan Prof Burhanuddin Rabbani and termed it a severe setback to the ongoing peace process. Sherpao also urged Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani to request for calling the emergency meeting of the Peace and Reconciliation Commission so that the ongoing Afghan-owned peace process could be saved from derailing. He also expressed serious concern over Afghan minister Stanikzai who was also injured critically in the suicide attack, which had killed Prof Rabbani and said that the incident would have negative repercussions on the ongoing peace process as well as the back channel negotiations underway for achieving lasting peace in Afghanistan. Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao paying glowing tributes to Prof Rabbani for his efforts for Afghan peace said that he had interaction with him during the recent past in Abu Dhabi and some other world capitals in connection with the peace process. He said the need for continuing the peace dialogue and not let this incident derail the whole process and called upon all the stakeholders to be committed to their cause to bring peace to Afghanistan. At the time of suicide attack Bhuranuddin Rabbani was negotiating with people in connection with the peace process, he added. To another question he said that Afghan peace process was passing through a critical phase as on one hand NATO troops deadline to leave the country was approaching near while on the other hand the endeavours to bring normalcy in the country were also at its peak with a conference for peace process was scheduled in Istanbul on November 2 while another conference in this connection was scheduled in Bonn in December. To a question he said that the people engaged in the Afghan process should forge unity against the elements who did not want to see peace in the war-ravaged Afghanistan and in the process Pakistan should play its proactive role by standing with the people of Afghanistan in this time of trial like it did in the recent past.
