ISLAMABAD (APP) The government is all set to start the construction of multi-purpose Kurram Tangi dam as the feasibility study, detailed engineering design and tender documents of the project have already been completed. The dam to be constructed on Kurram River (FATA) would cost Rs.17,205 million, official sources told APP here Tuesday. They said that re-designing of the dam has also been completed and it would increase storage capacity from 0.9 million acre feet (MAF) to 1.2 MAF. As a result of the increase in the dams storage capacity, people from Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Karak and North Waziristan Agency would benefit from the project. Around 385 acres land has been acquired so far and Rs.17 million paid to the local administration for the purpose. The sources said that the dam having 1.2 million acre feet (MAF) water storage capacity would also generate 83 MW cheap hydel electricity besides irrigating 0.35 million acres of land. They said that various projects including Khan Khwar, Allai Khwar, Duber Khwar, Jinnah, Gomal Zam and Satpara dams are also expected to be completed by 2012 which would not only collectively generate 453 MW cheap hydel electricity but also irrigate thousand of acres barren land. They said that detailed engineering design of Munda dam (740 MW) would also be started in the current year.
