KASUR-Despite the fact journalism is a respectable profession as mediamen not only keep the public and government updated about problems confronted by the society but also find out ways and make suggestions to deal with it.
But for the past few years, the police have developed a habit of registering fake cases against the mediamen at the behest of influential groups.
It was crux of a meeting held here to condemn the registration of fake case against senior journalist Muhammad Ahmed Chaudhry and his brothers at the behest of some lawyers. The office bearers of Kasur Press Club, Electronics Reporters Association and Union of Journalists attended the meeting.
On the occasion, Kasur Press Club President Muhammad Ashraf Wahla said that Ahmed Ch is a senior journalist and a man of upright character. He has never been involved in any illegal activity which can force the police to register a case against him. “No clue has yet been found for what he was booked,” he said.
The press club chairman Dr Saleemur Rehman pointed out that the police should remain neutral in the case and investigate the matter with honesty to find out the truth.
Electronics Reporters Association (ERA) President advised the lawyers to mind their ways. “Being educated and respectable members of society, this provocative behaviour and manners like street boys do not suit their personality,” he pointed out. He also urged the police to launch a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure speedy justice to the deserving one, either lawyers or Ahmed. The ERA Secretary General Tariq Mehmood Jutt also condemned registration of fake case and urged police to investigate the incident with honesty.
Union of Journalists President Ata M Kasuri alleged that it was the lawyers who went to Muhammad Ahmed’s house and treated him rudely. Later, they also forced the police to register a case against him and his brothers, he added, saying the lawyers’ aggression is intolerable. He urged the police to take step against the main accused Ilyas, adding that the fake cases registered against Ahmed Ch and his brothers should be cancelled immediately.
At conclusion of the meeting, the participants demanded Chief Justice of Pakistan, LHC Chief Justice and Punjab IG Police to order immediate cancellation of the cases.
Muhammad Shafiq, Ch Imran Zaib, Saleem Anjum Baloch, Zakir Khan, Imran Faizi and Khalid Nawaz Khan also attended the meeting.
