KARACHI – A meeting of the core committee – formed to come up with suggestions for the strict implementation of the SLGO 1979 – in its maiden meeting on Saturday recommended that the authority to control development works be taken back from the commissioners/deputy commissioners and delegated to the elected representatives.
Held at the Chief Minister’s House, the meeting discussed the role of the commissioners, deputy commissioners and local government officers in the light of the present circumstances. After a thorough discussion, it approved some recommendations that would be submitted to the chief minister for consideration and an ultimate decision.
The committee, constituted two days back by the chief minister, comprised Senior Minister for Education Pir Mazharul Haq, Minister for Local Government Agha Siraj Durrani, Minister Finance Murad Ali Shah, Minister Law Muhammad Ayaz Soomro and Minister Archives Engineer Rafique of the PPP, Sindh Minister Syed Sardar Ahmed, Minister for IT Raza Haroon and Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed of the MQM. Adviser to the CM, Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh of the PML-F is also on the committee.
According to Imtiaz Sheikh, the committee recommended the chief minister to withdraw the powers of the commissioners and deputy commissioners as regards development schemes. It suggested that the elected representatives be delegated the very powers instead.
The suggestions would be presented to Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah after another meeting, to be held soon.
