LAHORE – Environmental organizations, working for the cause of climate protection in the country, have called for switching over to renewable energy resources and green technology to overcome power shortages in the country as it is cleaner as well as cheaper.
Justice to Nature Chairman Sardar Aasif Ali Sial has flayed the utilization of non-renewable energy resources for electricity generation, resulting into depletion of natural resources and causing massive pollution on the earth. Addressing a press conference at Lahore Press Club on Saturday to mark Earth Day 2012, he said that maximum utilization of renewable energy in power generation was the need of the hour to take the country out of crisis as it was cost effective as well as cleaner.
“At present the energy crisis is depicting the improper prioritization and utilization of non renewable resources and lack of development of renewable or in common terms alternate energy resources. It is time to switch over to renewable energy, including hydel, solar and wind to deal with the current energy crisis”, Sardar Aasif said.
He said that people were frustrated with the failure of government to take steps toward protecting and preserving the clean and healthy environment. “Earth Day 2012 will act as a launching pad for environmental movement to provide people with the opportunity to unite their voices in a call for a sustainable future for our planet. Earth Day 2012 Campaign is designed to organize and promote events to help the slogan ‘Mobilize the Earth’.
Individuals of every age, organizations, students, NGOs, businessmen and governments can voice their support by performing environment friendly actions and lending their names to this global referendum demanding change leading to green revolution all around the world,” he added. He was of the view that throughout the month of April, 2012 civil society should run a campaign with the aim to promote the principle of Rio which says that States shall cooperate in a spirit of global partnership to conserve, protect and restore the health and integrity of the Earth’s ecosystem and also call upon the local, national and International political will to put an end to fossil fuel subsidies, embrace renewable energy technology, improve energy efficiency and make green energy universally accessible.
