LAHORE –Additional Inspector General of Police Punjab (Addl. IGP) Haji Muhammad Aslam Tareen on Saturday assumed charge as Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore shortly after the DIG (Operations) Ghulam Mahmood Dogar had reshuffled several SHOs of different police stations of the City. On his arrival at the Capital City Police Headquarters, DIG (Investigation) Malik Ali Amir, and senior staff members of CCPO Office welcomed Aslam Tareen.

However, except Omer Saeed, no other senior police officers from operations wing including Mahmood Dogar, SSP (Operations) Sajjad Manj and others bothered to welcome the new chief.

It may be noted here, in his first tenure as CCPO Lahore Aslam Tareen brought several crime fighter police officers in Lahore Police including DPO Muzaffargarh Munir Zia Rao, DPO Sheikhupura Dr Haider Ashraf, DPO Sahiwal Rana Ayaz Saleem, SP CIA Capt Liaqat Ali Malik, SP Omer Saeed Malik, SP Muntazir Mehdi, and others. Similarly, he successfully rooted out the lobbing among several PSP SPs and even thrown them out of the Lahore Police.

Official statistics showed that during his first tenure as CCPO, Tareen rounded up 33 terrorists, involved in brazen attack on Sri Lankan cricket Team in Lahore, attack on Emergency Police 15 Building adjacent to CCPO Office and unabashed attack on worship places of minorities in Model Town. During this span of time, Aslam Tareen also traced out almost 40, 000 cases including 508 of murders, 850 of attempted murders, 50 of kidnapping for ransom, 51 of dacoity-cum-murder, 154 of dacoity, 123 of car snatching and 462 of motorbikes snatching.

Aslam Tareen had taken a firm stand and announced that former CIA Station Head in Pakistan Raymond Allen Davis had committed a ‘cold blood murder’ near Mozang Crossings. A well recognized success of Mr. Tareen was of turnaround of Police Welfare Petrol Pump, which was going in loss since long. Aslam Tareen also constructed 14 new buildings and renovated the old ones.

Police records, however, also showed that street crimes had increased in Aslam Tareen’s first tenure. Similarly, police had also failed to nab dozens of the low profile dacoits, robbers and other criminals. Alarming rise in armed robberies, attacks on policemen, flourishing culture of anti-social elements and similar crime is the prime challenge for Aslam Tareen.
