LAHORE - PIA thrashed KESC 5-0 on the opening day of the 28th Junior U-20 National Hockey Championship at the National Hockey Stadium Lahore. The championship was inaugurated by former Olympic hockey captain and PHF Secretary Brig (r) MH Atif who was introduced to both PIA and KESC teams before start of the match. On this occasion Atif was accompanied by Secretary Sports Punjab Munnawar Abbas, President Punjab Hockey Association Khawaja Zarar Kaleem, Secretary Punjab Hockey Association former Olympian Rana Mujahid, former Olympians Afzal Manna, Muhammad Akhlaq and other sports personalities. There were a number of hat-tricks in this encounter with Naseer Naveed (5 goals), Farhan Ali (5 goals), Naghman Ahmed (4 goals), Arslan Tahir (3 goals) while M. shakeel (2) and M. Atif (2) were the other scorers. Northern Area's solitary goal was scored by Naveed Akhter. Punjab earned 6 penalty corners and Northern Area got 4. In the other matches of the day, NWFP White trounced Islamabad 8-0. NWFP led 4-0 at half time. Abdul Samad, Barkat Ali and Zeeshan Tariq scored two goals each while Haroon-ur Rasheed and Ali Raza completed the tally with one goal each. NWFP got five penalty corners while Islamabad earned two. In another encounter, Punjab Colour defeated Sindh Colour 4-1. In this well contested match Punjab led 2-0 at half time. Qamar Abbas converted a penalty corner in the 26th minute and Adnan doubled the lead in the 32nd minute. Soon after resumption Punjab stretched the lead from M. Nazim's penalty corner conversion and then same player put the issue beyond doubt with a fine field goal. Sindh reduced the margin from Salman Khursheed's field goal. Punjab had 9 penalty corners while Sindh got 2. In the fourth match of the morning session, Railway hammered Balochistan 17-0. Railway led 7-0 at half time. Akbar Ali achieved the feat by scoring a double hat-trick with 7 goals while M. Kashif and Khurram Shahzad performed hat-tricks respectively with three goals each. Sohail Mustafa, Kashif Adrees, Khawar Maqsood and Shafqat Ali scored one goal each. Railway got three penalty corners while Balochistan had none. In the late afternoon session, Pakistan Steel leapfrogged over Pakistan Police 1-0. Both the teams were at even keel at half time. Pak Steel with more coordination than the police men and earned no less than 7 penalty corners but without any result. Police too got three penalty corners which proved abortive. However, Pak Steel snatched victory through their spearhead Irfan Malik who capitalized on a rebound two minutes before the final hooter. In an other match, Sindh White defeated NWFP Colour 5-2. Both the teams were locked 1-1 at half time. For Sindh Salman Khan slotted two, M. Sarfraz 2 and Yasar Ghafoor one goal while Zia-ur-Rehman and Bilal scored one goal each for NWFP.
