According to the American media, Pakistani government officials are very intrigued by the presence of highly encrypted communication gear in the possession of Pakistan's number one terrorist, Baitullah Mehsud. This equipment enables him to collect real-time information of all movements of Pakistani forces from an 'unidentified foreign source' without being intercepted by Pakistani intelligence outfits in the tribal area. Pakistani authorities say no 'foreign source' other than the Indian agencies can support Mehsud. But our so-called leaders just do not have the nerve to confront the Indians with a 'check', asking for UN Investigations in the matter. Expecting these lily-livered leaders to hold out in the face of the terrorist threat and lead us out of the tribal crisis will be a vain hope. Imagine the extent of helplessness of the government we have at present; the leader of the party in power, Benazir Bhutto, was killed in a bomb blast with all the incriminating evidence pointing squarely at Baitullah Mehsud. But the leadership that took over the party after her demise, including her own dear spouse, is adamant not to accept this evidence because that would mean accepting there was a foreign hand in her murder. Giving the assignment of Benazir's murder investigation to the UN simply amounts to exonerating the US and its agencies out of the plot. -M. SAEED, Islamabad, via e-mail, August 8.
