Rs170b ADB loan for Pepco flood-hit infrastructure

LAHORE - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will give Rs 170 billion emergency grant to rebuild flood-hit infrastructure of pepco and wapda in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan including repair of transmission lines and grids station which were highly damaged by unprecedented floods in the country, sources in PEPCO revealed. Besides ADB, other foreign donors including World Bank are also giving monitory and technical assistance to PEPCO and WAPDA to repair flood related damages in its power system. Sources said that as per recent PEPCO surveys the floods have caused more than Rs 12 billion loss to infrastructure of PEPCO and WAPDA as against initial estimate of only Rs 4 billion. The loss indication digits may go higher after ground situation comes to surface once the survey of whole country is completed as the process is still in progress along with the rehabilitation work, a top official close to PEPCOS rehabilitation work, told The Nation on Saturday. Teams comprising staff and engineers of PEPCO and WAPDA have started repair and rehabilitation work on its transmission lines and grid stations which have been damaged or totally washed away in unprecedented floods in the country. About electricitys supply, officials said, it will be restored in all calamity hit areas at the earliest by connecting various grid stations by emergency tie lines for two areas in the same region. In this regard, PEPCO has set up emergency power supply centres at important locations in power distribution companies all over the country. Complete rehabilitation process may take some time but electricity supply and PEPCO system will become operative in all areas soon after water level drops both in the flood hit villages and cities. Over 20,000 transformers and electricity polls have also been damaged in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and same is the case of other flooded parts of the country. The huge loss was the washing away of entire 132 KVA grid station at Madyan, Swat, and damage to Chakdara-Swat transmission line. Now restoration of 132 KV Mardan-Noshehra-Jahangira Transmission Line as well 132KV grid station in Swat and Chakdara-Swat line is on top priority, sources said. Only in KP Peshawar Electricity Supply Company (PESCO) suffered a damage of Rs 3.5b. PEPCO spokesman said that despite huge damage to PEPCO power system, PEPCO is still providing uninterrupted power supply to all provincial governments and local administration for doing relief work in the flood. He said PEPCO has suffered extreme damage to its installations during current rains and floods but despite that it is hoped that soon power supply will be restored effected part of KP also. The spokesman said PEPCO has issued directions to its all offices to speed up the rehabilitation work along with emergency power to supply calamity hit areas.
