Rule of law

It was a most extraordinary moment and a sign of satisfaction for the ordinary Egyptian to see the 'strong man' Hosni Mubarak (with his two sons and cronies) being brought to the Court on a stretcher and put behind a caged bar, on charges of murders, corruption, misuse and abuse of powers etc. Another astonishing aspect was that the trial was open and shown live throughout the world. The Egyptians must now be holding their heads high for showing a path of democracy, liberty and equality before law for all, irrespective of his/their status. But the ultimate credit and honor must go to that young man from Tunisia who sacrificed his life to earn his daily bread honorably though in a poorly manner. But the above is also a sad and pathetic reflection on the affairs prevailing in this blighted and unfortunate country. Today those who are involved in corruption of unspeakable height and degree, extortion, abuse and misuse of power etc are not only given protection but are patronized, praised, elevated and showered with awards and honors. And this audacity and impudence in spite of rulings and orders of our honorable higher courts Rather if one could use the word and with all respects, the courts are being slapped in a most obstinate, stubborn and pernicious manner by those who call themselves most democratic and law abiding people If one looks back, these 64 years of independence have not given anything good to the ordinary Pakistani. Rather it has taken away even those small moments of happiness, joy and glee which were part of his life. Millions of them are now living in filth and misery. For them no savior seems in sight. On the other hand those in power and authority or otherwise are amassing tons of wealth and riches and living lavishly and in the most pompous manner. Let them come out from their houses of glass and luxury and visit some poor man's family in some rural area or on the outskirts of Karachi on the road leading to the Toll Plaza and other places. It is time they should give up their lavish and ostentatious life styles and see the realities of life. Let rule of law, justice, literacy, peace, economical and social justice not adulterated by corruption prevail in this country. Therein only lies our salvation, integrity, honour and independence. If distress and deprivation come (to the masses) can Revolution be far behind? ZAHID HUSSAIN BORHANI, Karachi, August 16.
