LAHORE  - A private security guard killed an alleged robber and wounded his accomplice during robbery attempt at a merchant shop in Sanda on Thursday, police said.

The guard, identified as Qamar Zaman, also sustained bullet wounds and was rushed to a hospital, where his condition was reported to be serious till Thursday night.

Police investigators said that three armed bandits forced their entry into a merchant shop located in Hakimawala bazaar and started looting when a security guard opened fire to foil the robbery attempt. The bandits also opened straight fire at the guard, triggering armed encounter in the busy area in daylight.

As a result, two bandits and the guard sustained bullet wounds and were rushed to a hospital, where one of the bandits expired later. However, the third accomplice of the robbers collected Rs100,000 from the shop and managed to escape from the scene.

According to eyewitnesses, the gunfire caused panic in the locality as many shopkeepers were seen rushing to safer places. Police reached the spot when the robbers had escaped. The body was moved to the morgue for autopsy. Further investigation was underway.

Suicide: A 24-year-old youth ended his life by shooting himself in the temple in Bhatti Gate on Wednesday. The family told the police that Tahir Hafeez committed suicide over domestic dispute with his elder brother. The youth went to the rooftop of his house and shot himself in the temple with a pistol. Police handed over the body to the family.

Accident: A 27-year-old motorcyclist was killed while another wounded seriously when their bikes bumped into each other at Kala Khtai Road on Wednesday. Resident of Kot Khawaja Saeed, Muhammad Yousaf, was on his way home when his bike bumped into another two-wheeler. Both the motorcyclists were rushed to a hospital, where Yousaf expired later.
