LAHORE - The Lahore Development Authority is going to start about a dozen new development projects in the provincial capital with a huge amount of Rs5.15 billion, allocated for kicking off such projects, it is learnt.

It is also learnt that among the proposed development projects, only one new development project ‘Signal Free Corridor’ could be kicked off by LDA so far which earlier temporarily was halted on the direction of Lahore High Court in April. However LDA resumed work on the project after the Supreme Court set aside orders of the Lahore High Court in July.

The project includes construction of 7 kilometers long Signal Free Corridors from Qurtaba Chowk Jail Road to Liberty Roundabout Main Boulevard, Gulberg, at a cost of Rs1.2 billion and such amount was allocated by LDA in its budget for the financial year 2015-16. Work for construction is expected to be finished within a period of about four months.

The project includes two underpasses and seven signal free U-turns. The first underpass will be constructed at Shadman Chowk on Chamber of Commerce Road connecting Shadman Market, which will help in uninterrupted traffic flow in the Chowk.

The second underpass will be constructed near Sherpaow Bridge for traffic plying towards Canal Bridge. Due to construction of underpass at Fawara Chowk crossing, there will be uninterrupted flow of traffic on Jail Road and Main Boulevard Gulberg and vice versa. Whereas, seven signal free U-turns will be constructed at Eden Center Chowk, Shadman Chowk, PIC Chowk, Canal Road, Zafar Ali Road, Fawara Chowk, Main Market Chowk and Zahoor Elahi Chowk crossings.

Among the other new projects one is two lanes Dual Carriage Way which will be constructed with a sum of Rs60 million and would connect Ferozepur Road to Jinnah Flyover along Railway Track This project will help in resolving the problem of such commuters who had to cross railway track where they have to face huge traffic jams during crossing.

The LDA also allocated a sum of one billion rupees for carrying out various new projects under Public Private Partnership Mode. These projects include construction of Hussain Chowk Flyover on cost sharing basis. This project will help in resolving the flow of traffic on the most important roads of the Gulberg including Noor Jahan Road and M.M Alam Road.

The surrounding areas of the Hussain Chowk are among the major business hubs including Liberty Market, Fardous Market, Ghalib Market and shopping malls and restaurants functioning on MM Alam Road. Huge traffic jams in this chowk could be witnessed in this area as routine matter and had become a permanent nuisance for the commuters who used to visit these markets for shopping. However, flyover would be constructed with public private partnership mode for making traffic flow smooth.

LDA would also construct another flyover on Defence Chowk Walton Road and the flyover has been renamed as ‘Defence Road Flyover’ and it would be constructed with public private partnership in order to make the smooth flow of traffic on both Defence Road and Walton Road.

For connecting the provincial capital with Jaranwala Road, LDA would also construct a new road which will be known as Sharaqpur Byepass. Like above mentioned two important projects this project would also be constructed with public private mode and would help in shrinking the distance among the people of villages of Sharqpur and Lahore with providing shortcut approach to the farmers for reaching the vegetable and fruit markets.

Among the new proposed projects of LDA, Kalashah Kaku Expressway is one of the mega projects which would also be constructed with public private partnership and will connect Multan Road from Samanabad Chowk to Kalashah Kaku. The project would provide an easy and speedy approach to the Lahorites to approach Grand Trunk Road and the proposed Apparel Park (area marked for garments industry with the cooperation of China). This project could bring economic prosperity for the business community dealing in garments.
