PESHAWAR - Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Badminton Association (KPBA) secretary and Pakistan Badminton Federation (PBF) associate secretary Haji Amjad Khan Friday said that Pakistan would host Chinese badminton team for a five-match series in October-November at Jinnah Sports Complex Islamabad.

Talking to the reporters during the inaugural ceremony of the 4th NBP Ranking Badminton Championship, which began at Tariq Wadood Hall, Qayyum Sports Complex, Haji Amjad said: “After Chinese team visit, we will talk to other South Asian badminton associations including Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bhutan and Maldives to visit Pakistan in future.”

Haji Amjad said that the NBP Badminton Championship was carrying four different categories including men and women singles, men doubles and mixed doubles. For the first time, mixed doubles matches would be part of the event. “This championship is a ranking event of the KP Badminton Association and top male and female players would represent KP in the national events in future.”

Regional chief NBP Atlas Khan assured that NBP would continue its support as far as healthy sports activities in KP were concerned. “From the last 10 years or so, NBP has been contributing its share for the promotion of sports across the province.”

Earlier in the opening match, Masood Khan and Nadeem Khan of KP Police defeated Hayat and Uzair of Dera Ismail Khan 3-1 with the scores of 21-19, 15-21, 21-18, 21-19. In the women singles, Arifa of Swabi thrashed Yusra Khan of Mansehra 3-0, as the score was 21-15, 21-18, 21-19.

A selection committee headed by international badminton player Mian Saddaqat Shah along with three members will thoroughly monitor the performance of the players before short-listing them for the month-long camp at the same venue.

Six players each including females from Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Malakand, Buner, Dir Upper and Lower, Swat, Dera Ismail Khan, Kohat, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Tank, Abbottabad, Haripur and host Peshawar will vie for the top honor.
