LAHORE - Two women and three girls were buried alive while eight others were critically wounded when the roof of a dilapidated building collapsed in the walled city, rescue workers said yesterday.

Locals said that a wedding function was taking place in the three-storey house located near Masjid Wazir Khan in Delhi Gate, when its roof caved in all of a sudden during the small hours yesterday. Initial investigations revealed that the building was in dilapidated condition and its roof collapsed following the recent rains.

“At least five persons expired on the spot. We shifted eight other victims to a local hospital with multiple injuries,” said Muhammad Younis, a spokesman for the Edhi Foundation. The police later reached the spot and handed over the bodies to the families after fulfilling legal formalities.

Several wedding guests were present in the small and congested building when its roof caved in. “It was really terrible. Everything changed within a few minutes. Those who were celebrating the wedding party were seen bleeding and crying,” said Imran Ali, a nearby resident.

Rescue workers identified the deceased persons as Tafzeela, 40, Mahwish, 25, Aqsa, 10, Mahnoor, 6, and Dua, 4. The condition of two of the injured was said to be serious at a local hospital. Authorities were investigating the incident.

The city district government has marked hundreds of buildings as dangerous in the walled city but the residents are unwilling to vacate the structures. The authorities last year had launched a campaign to urge the residents to leave such buildings but people refused to leaves their homes. The residents demanded the government to provide them alternate living facilities.
