PESHAWAR (APP) - National Champion Tariq Mehmood came from behind by winning the trophy of the 43rd Frontier Open Golf Championship played here at 6666-yard PAF Golf Course on Sunday. Golf is a game of calculation as a miss stroke could take a golfer to the bottom from top and a good birdie put guide the same to reach at the top. The same was well illustrated on Tariq Mehmood, who was struggling behind on the first two days against leader Inayatullah, came back by carding best round of the day 70, two under par, to take the trophy. While Inayatullah, the leader on the first two-day, slipped to second because of bad drive that landed in the nullah, caused him two strokes at time he was fighting nick-to-nick with Tariq. "It was my day as I scored six birdies and only a stroke missed at holes no. 3, 7, 10, and 11," Tariq told APP soon after finishing his last day round. "My fellow golfers were playing very good in the top four flight of Inayatullah, Sajid Khan and Major Shoaibuddin but the could not keep their momentum due to soft roll of the ball at the greens because of sunny weather. Tariq birdies at holes nos, 6, 9, 12,13, 16 and 17 which guided him to reach to the top before struggling at second on the first two-day. The pin placing, he said, was difficult enough on the last day but my long shots were perfectly landed on all greens, which eased my task for birdie or par. Hitting 16 regulations, Tariq simply was outstanding, showing his supremacy against his fellow golfers by taking a distance of nine strokes from runners-up Inayatullah. Tariq added 70, to his over night 74, 73 to make an aggregated total of 219, three over par, over 54 holes. Playing 36, par, at front nine with two birdies and 34, two under par, at back nine with four birdies, Tariq marched his way to victory. Inayatullah Yousafzai added 80, eight over par, to his over night 73, 75 by making 228. Only a birdie at hole no. 6, he made seven bogies and a double bogy at hole no. 17, which badly marred his overall excellent play. His ball landed in the nullah at hole no. 17 where he got two strokes. Sajid, a promising young golfer, got third position with his gross score 230, by adding 80 to his over night 75, 75. In the ladies currently national champion Tahira Nazir got first position, followed by former national champion Soni Wali and last year title-holder Dr. Farida Naseer.
