ISLAMABAD - The Senate Body on Information Saturday asked the high-ups of Pakistan Television Corporation to gear up its efforts to recover dues from defaulters. The Sub-Committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting has taken serious notice over not recovering dues from defaulters by the administration of PTV and summoned former MD PTV Yousaf Baig Mirza to know the detail of agreements inked with private companies regarding telecasting PTV transmission in USA and Britain. The committee opined that on what law, the administration of PTV awarding business to defaulters and what procedure was adopted for recovery of dues. Senator Tariq Azeem directed the administration of PTV to seek all details of the company before signing any agreement with it and expressed his surprise over giving business of Rs 127 million to owner of four companies Shahid Zaheer and not recovering dues from him. PTV has no law to check this and take any legal action, the committee observed. The committee was informed that owner of ATV a local TV channel was owned Rs 143 million which was not paid yet. MD PTV Arshad Khan told the committee that Marketing Department of PTV purchased old dramas and songs without opening tenders and the convener of the committee directed PTV authorities to advertise tender to purchasing old songs and films. MD PTV told the committee the government departments owed dues of Rs 12 million to PTV, adding PTV has recovered dues of Rs 570 million and has to recover an amount of Rs 630 million. The MD PTV further told that PTV has no qualified accountant and the convener on this expressed its annoyance and said that no action was taken against Javed Jabbar over dishonoring of cheque of Rs 4.7 million. The committee asked the administration of PTV not to fear from bigwigs, saying if they take action against them then no one would courage to do wrong. Information Secretary Ashfaq Gondal told that after the appointment of new MD in PTV, appropriate way was adopted for business recovery and departments of marketing and recovery were separated. The sub-committee of the senate body met here that was chaired by convener of the committee, Senator Tariq Azeem. The meeting was attended by Senator Tahira Latif, Muhammad Naseer Mengal, Secretary Information Ashfaq Gondal, MD PTV Arshad Khan and other senior officials of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
