Nothing comes from nothing

It was mere rhetoric and addition to the prevailing confusion shrouding the Raymond Davis issue when Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani rose on the floor of the National Assembly and read out governments policy statement on the subject. Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid) Parliamentary Leader Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat has truly depicted the confusion of the House, as soon as the Prime Minister took his seat after reading out the statement, by saying that the Parliament and the whole nation wanted a categorical stance of the government on immunity issue of Raymond Davis. Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the breakaway coalition partner of the ruling PPP, supplemented his argument with a bit harsh tone asking the rulers to come out clear on the issue. It was the first day of JUI-F MPs on Opposition benches and Maulana Fazlur Rehman being a seasoned parliamentarian made his presence on Opposition benches felt and came out hard on the rulers and termed its overall policy on war on terror flawed and in his views the Davis case was one of its fallouts. After the Prime Ministers policy statement the MPs sitting on both treasury and opposition benches were at loss to understand the governments stance on Raymond Davis as Prime Minister Gilani has just said that government would not go contrary to the wishes of the people of Pakistan and in the same breath said that being the law-abiding nation Pakistan would definitely fulfil its international obligations under the Vienna Convention and other legal instruments to which country was signatory. The PM did not touch the immunity issue of Davis who had killed two Pakistanis in Lahore and simply said that the matter was sub judice and they would follow and honour the courts decision. PML-Q Parliamentary Leader Faisal Saleh Hayat has rightly pointed out that the policy statement of Prime Minister has not touched the most controversial portion of the Davis saga - the diplomatic immunity he is claiming and the ambiguous stance of Government on it. Ignoring the demand of both Faisal and Fazl, Gilani left the house leaving the MPs in complete confusion as even after having heard the policy statement of government on Raymond Davis issue and that too from the Prime Minister, they have not get even an iota of extra information on the subject. Before the PMs arrival Interior Minister Rehman Malik and a few other ministers were quite active in going to the key and vocal leaders sitting on Opposition benches to soften them so that they could not react following the statement of Prime Minister, but all in vain, as both Faisal and Fazl, who spoke on the issue, came out with scathing criticism on what they termed the ambiguous policy statement on the issue. The MPs on the first day of the last session of the third parliamentary year in the private conversation remained discussing the Davis issue and the background meetings of the key government figures with US Ambassador in Pakistan and the options being discussed to resolve the issue with win-win situation for both the countries working closely on international war on terror. Some of the MPs aware of the behind the curtain developments on this front informed The Nation that Prime Minister Gilani had also taken PML-N leadership on board and the focus was on getting the victim families agreed to get compensation for their dear ones who had lost their lives in the gory and ugly event in Lahore. Tail Piece: While concluding his speech Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat in a satirical fashion appreciated Prime Ministers for following the legacy of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and expressed his optimism that with the people like Abdul Hafiz Sheikh, Ms Hina Rabbani Khar and Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan the party would truly follow the Bhuttos legacy.
