President bars PPP from taking action

ISLAMABAD - The central leadership of PPP has decided not to take any immediate disciplinary action against former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who according to a senior party leader, was continuously violating the party discipline after not getting same portfolio in truncate Federal Cabinet. Sources in the party informed The Nation that the matter of Shah Mahmood Qureshi came up for detailed discussion between President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilanis meeting and it was the unanimous view of the leadership not to show any immediate reaction to his utterance against the party leadership and its policies. Sources further informed that he could be served with show-cause on his violation of the party discipline at some later stage. However, he has definitely lost the respect and trust he used to enjoy in the eyes of the party Co-Chairman and President Asif Ali Zardari and his position in the party would now be among the disgruntled lot like Ms Naheed Khan, Senator Safdar Abbassi, Ch. Aitzaz Ahsan and many others who had lost their pivotal position in the party, the sources added. To a question, a senior party leader close to party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari on condition of anonymity said that there was no plan to oust Shah Mahmood Qureshi from the party but confirmed that he would definitely be losing his past position in the party for blatant and continuous violation of the party discipline. Sources in the party informed that the position taken by Shah Mahmood Qureshi on the Raymand Davis issue was unwarranted as the decision on granting of diplomatic immunity or not would be based on the documents available with the Foreign Ministry and Government had already taken a position that as the matter is in the court of law so court decision on the subject would be followed. In this backdrop, the statement of Shah Mahmood Qureshi was just to create confusion and to malign the government of attempting to grant immunity to Raymond Davis under cover, they said. Similarly the follow up address of Shah Mahmood Qureshi and a couple of Press conferences he had addressed after failing to get the portfolio of his choice in new Cabinet he had attempted to give the impression that he was not given the portfolio of foreign affairs on US pressure as he was against granting of immunity to Raymond Davis. At the same time he had tacitly attempted to doubt the credentials of the party leadership by terming them as corruption tainted, which in his view could not resolve the problems of the masses, the sources added. Sources in the party informed that it was the decision of party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari and his kitchen cabinet not to react to the utterances of Shah Mahmood Qureshi right now and he would be given show-cause notice at some later stage. Political circles were of the view that the way Shah Mahmood Qureshi had taken the stand against the decision of the party and the way he had addressed a public gathering in his home town Multan made things quite difficult for him and it would become almost impossible for him to regain his past position in the party. Political observers were of the view that as Shah Mahmood Qureshi was having immense influence in the Seraiki belt and parts of Sindh province it was not easy for the party to show him a door and that was the reason party was adopting restraint in the face of his continuous violation of party discipline. But definitely the party leadership would not give him the place and status he was earlier enjoying in the party and he would be pushed back to the lot of partys disgruntled, the position Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi would not accept and finally part ways with the party.
