LAHORE Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said the elements involved in the heinous trade of spurious drugs are the enemies of humanity and deserve maximum punishment, and there is a need for a surgical operation for curbing this trade. He was presiding over a meeting to review the progress of ongoing campaign against spurious drugs here on Monday. MPA Dr Saeed Elahi, Dr Asad Ashraf and Tanveer Aslam, Secretary Health, Director General Health and officers concerned were also present. The CM directed for submitting a comprehensive plan to him within seven days for this purpose, and also issued instructions for intensifying the ongoing campaign against spurious drugs. He said this time again, Punjab government was determined to root out the scourge of spurious drugs. Solid measures were taken during my last tenure for elimination of spurious drugs which had yielded positive results. In 1998, my government sent the elements engaged in this trade behind bars due to which the factories producing spurious drugs were closed down. Similar measures are needed now and Health Department should depute competent and honest drug inspectors, he said, adding that there was a need for rapid progress without wasting time to purge the province of spurious medicines. He asked for a detailed briefing about Healthcare Commission in the next meeting. Earlier, Secretary Health Fawad Hassan Fawad gave a briefing regarding the ongoing campaign against spurious drugs. He said medicines were checked at 14509 places during last two months and 7810 samples were obtained during last two months. 685 shops were sealed for the complaints of the sale of spurious drugs and 19 cases were registered and heavy fines were imposed, he mentioned.
