PESHAWAR - Residents of Bara, Khyber Agency, and activists of Khyber Students Union (KSU) Tuesday held a protest demonstration against the ongoing military operation in tehsil Bara and warned that if the government failed to halt the operation, they would besiege the Governor’s House.

The protesting tribesmen led by Haris Khan Afridi, central president of KSU and Muslim Khan Afridi, were holding banners and placards inscribed with different slogans demanding halt to military offensive and steps for rehabilitation of the displaced tribal families. The infuriated protestors, gathered at Sher Shah Suri Road opposite to Cantonment Railway Station, were chanting full-throated slogans against the military offensive in Bara.

On this occasion, talking to media persons, the protesting students said that due to Bara operation against militants thousands of tribal families became homeless and were compelled to take shelter in IDPs camps in their own country.

They said due to the ‘so-called’ military action, dozens of innocent people including women and children were killed while many others were injured. A few days earlier in Akakhel area of Bara, a mortar shell was fired at the house of Niamat Shah, central general secretary of KSU in which two children were killed and five persons were injured.

They lamented that a step-motherly attitude with the people of Khyber Agency has been adopted by the incumbent government, adding that neither the victimised families were provided martyrs package, nor any other aid was given to compensate the affected people.

The demonstrators appealed to President Asif Zardari, Governor, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Masood Kausar and Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani to immediately stop the ongoing military operation in Bara and ease the lives of the tribesmen.
