“Nuclear weapons offer us nothing but a balance of terror, and a balance of terror is still terror.”
–George Wald
We live in times of risk. Consistently trying to mitigate it through laws, security apparatuses and what not, we still are not free from the probability of demise. Some risks are inherently immitigable – one of them is the issue of nuclear weapons. In 1954, the United States detonated and caused the world’s largest nuclear contamination through an operation called Operation Bravo. Due to a human error, the bomb which was detonated was two times its initial magnitude. Linking this to the contemporary time – as a nuclear power, Pakistan needs to be responsible. It needs to ensure that its programme never reaches the level of recklessness, as exhibited by the responsible. As one of the few countries which have not signed the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty, Pakistan already faces a lot of controversy in the international community. An accident would exacerbate the reputational damage even more.
