KARACHI  - Prominent singer Mehnaz Begum, who died in Bahrain on Saturday, was laid to rest here on Monday.Her funeral prayer was offered after Zohar at Khairul Amal Masjid in Ancholi area. She was buried in Wadi-e-Hussain graveyard near Karachi Super Highway.The well-known playback singer breathed her last on Saturday after protracted illness. She was being shifted to the United States from Bahrain for treatment when her condition worsened. Earlier, she remained hospitalised in Karachi for two weeks.Born in 1958 in Karachi, Mehnaz Begum sung a variety of genres but specialised in ghazal, thumri, dadra, khayal, drupad and reciting salam, noha and marsiya. She was the daughter of celebrated sub-continental singer Kajjan Begum.Legendary songstress Mehnaz Begum’s body arrived on Monday who had passed away in Bahrain on Saturday while on her way to United States for medical treatment arrived in Karachi two days after her death.A chronic patient of diabetes and asthma, Mehnaz was travelling to the US for advanced medical care, but death cut her journey short. According to sources her funeral prayer will be offered at Imam Bargah Ancholi following Zohar Prayer today (Monday). He last resting place will be in Wadi-e-Hussain graveyard in Sohrab Goth, they added.Reportedly she collapsed after her condition worsened while she was waiting for her flight to US in the boarding lounge at Bahrain airport.Mehnaz, 55, was rushed to a healthcare facility in the gulf state where she breathed her last. Doctors pronounced her dead soon after. She was the daughter of celebrated sub-continental singer Kajjan Begum.She sang over 2,500 songs for radio’ television, and films in a variety of genres like ghazal, thumri, dadra, khayal, and drupad.President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf have condoled her death terming it a national loss.
