KARACHI - Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Sunday announced launching membership drive of the party across the country. He said that the campaign was aimed at bringing party politics at grass root level and strengthening contact between the leadership and activists.

He said this while addressing a press conference at PPP Media Cell in Karachi along with Senator Sherry Rehman, former Senate Chairman Nayyar Hussain Bokhari, PPP Sindh President Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, PPP Karachi Division President Saeed Ghani and others.

He said that the drive is launched after a long time as it was not even initiated in the Benazir Bhutto era.

“PPP is the only party that is doing politics of Pakistan while the other parties are doing negative and GT Road focused politics. I have a positive message for the youth of Pakistan to come and join the grandson of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and son of Benazir Bhutto in order to bring peace and follow a progressive agenda across the country,” he said adding that he could not accomplish this mission without the help of masses.

Bilawal said that there were several issues in Sindh province which were needed to be addressed but the provincial government was taking steps towards it to resolve them. “We had established state of the art NICVD hospitals in Sindh while an anti-poverty program at union council level is also initiated which had benefitted 600,000 families in the province,” he said.

The PPP chairman said that whether it was governance or terrorism, we ask people to join PPP on the issue based politics. “We will be registering members through door to door campaigns, establishing party camps, messaging service and website,” he said adding that the entire data of the members would be collected in order to fill gap between leadership and activists. A website pppmembers.com was also launched for the purpose of registering members.

He said that the country is today witnessing an influence of right wing extremist politics but they would be furthering their agenda of progressive politics through their politics. “We could not pick up arms and do hate-mongering but we could raise our voice for rights of the people of the country,” he said.

He said that PPP was the one that brought forward the 18 Amendment and NFC award for the rights of the provinces but unfortunately, last five years had witnessed actions against these two very important things.

To a query as to if new party structure would be elected on the basis of the membership drive across the country, Bilawal said that they had recently selected the party leaderships after consultations with the activists but after the membership process, input on district level leadership would be taken.

To a query as to if Senate elections would be held on time, Bilawal Byutto said that they should be held on time and would be held on time and PPP would not allow Nawaz Sharif to acquire victory  in it.

To a query regarding rise in police encounters in Sindh province especially in Karachi, Bilawal Bhutto said he strongly condemn encounters across the country.

Unfortunately, the counter insurgency policy in the country is based on encounters but I demand to put a halt to it immediately, he said.

He said that the chief minister Sindh had taken a swift action in Naqeeb Mehsud case against the accused and initiated an inquiry but in similar incidents in other provinces, the cases are not given this sort of hype.

“A delegation on my behalf has gone to Waziristan to condole with the family of Naqeeb Mehsud,” he said.

He, however, said that Rao Anwar should also be given a chance to clarify his position and law should take its route in bringing the case to its logical end.

To a query regarding failure of joint opposition in Lahore public gathering, he said that PPP had always called for uniting forces but it was always Imran Khan who had damaged the cause of joint opposition through his acts.

“Such tactics from Imran Khan weakens opposition and make Nawaz Sharif stronger,” he said.

He also said that Nawaz Sharif has given a carrot to the chief minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif to become Prime Minister after 2018 general elections but when time would come he would not let this happen.
