Quetta - Unidentified armed assailants shot dead a former police officer, who was fired over the 2011 killing of five Chechen women, in a hit-and-run attack in Quetta on Sunday.
The Pakistani Taliban claimed Sunday's attack, saying it was revenge for the killing of the women.
Naseebullah Khan, a senior police officer in Quetta, said two gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on Fazlur Rehman outside a car showroom.
Police officials said ex-SHO of Airport Road Fazlur Rehman Kakar was killed by unknown attackers at Masjid Road. The victim died on the spot. His body was shifted to Civil Hospital Quetta for medico-legal procedures.
The law enforcement agencies personnel carried out search operations in Quetta’s Sariab and neighbouring areas and apprehended three suspected persons.
Attacks on security forces have intensified in the first month of 2018 as three police constables were shot dead the other day in Quetta and five law enforcement agencies personnel were killed in Kech district some days back.
Fazlur Rehman Kakar was the Station House Officer (SHO) of Airport Road police station when the Kharotabad incident occurred on May 17, 2011 in which five Chechans mistook for terrorists were killed by security personnel in Quetta.
Several senior security officers were suspended following a judicial inquiry conducted by Justice Hashim Khan Kakar into the matter. Fazlur Rehman Kakar was one of the officials suspended for negligence into the matter, while another officer ASI Raza Khan held responsible for Kharotabad incident was also gunned down in August 2013.
Balochistan Governor Muhammad Khan Achakzai strongly condemned the incident and directed the concerned authorities to arrest suspects.
He also prayed to Allah Almighty to rest the deported soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss with fortitude.
