A suicide blast in Islamabad and a series of explosions in Karachi have created severe panic across Pakistan. The seven blasts in Karachi came within 90 minutes of each other. According to IG Sindh Police Salahuddin Babar Khattak, the purpose of blasts was to create panic in the city. There is also a possibility that the people who planted these bombs wanted to fan ethnic tensions in the city. He also noted that the areas struck have a predominantly large Pakhtun population. It is also noted that the headquarters of Awami National Party is also located in these same areas. I agree with the investigating sources that the method adopted by the planners of Karachi blasts ruled out any connection of religious extremists. Various reports that recently emerged in media suggested that some elements were trying to create a bogey of 'Talibanisation' to create fear among the inhabitants of Karachi. One should not ignore the suicide blast in Indian embassy of Kabul either. It should be analyzed alongside the Karachi blasts. -ABDUL KAREEM, Sialkot, via e-mail, July 8.
