Back in the saddle

CH Shujjat Hussain and Mushahid Hussain Syed returned unopposed to the PML-Q's top offices in the intra-party elections on Monday as the rival group boycotted the process. It was the hard work that finally paid off. Since the Party's debacle in the last general elections the Chaudhrys have been moving around, interacting with the party leaders and workers and carrying out enrollment campaigns. The presence of the 1500 General Council members indicates they never lost contact with the party cadres. The likeminded group suddenly emerged ahead of the election but it failed to muster enough support from within the party. The tussle will continue as dissidents have decided to challenge this election in the court but there is little likelihood of the breakaway faction creating any impact. At the same time the Chaudhrys of Gujrat also have little reason to bask in the glory of being re-elected unopposed at a time when their parliamentarians keep deserting them and joining the PML-Q Forward Bloc both in the National and Punjab Assemblies.
