LAHORE The Government College University Lahore has honored its 51 best sportsmen with shields, cash prizes and titles like 'Mr Super Fit, 'Man of Mountains, 'Mr Muscular, 'Cheeta and 'The Wall for their outstanding performances in national and international competitions during the sports calendar of 2009-2010. The GCU Sports Board organised a special ceremony on the directions of the vice chancellor to acknowledge the talent of these sportsmen. GCU Dean of Sciences Dr Ikramul Haq chaired the ceremony attended by a large number of Old Ravians sports legends including former Olympian Munir Dar. GCU student Wahab Irfan Butt set nine new records and won the gold medal in the Inter-Collegiate Weightlifting Championship. He has also qualified for the World Olympics by securing two bronze medals in the South Asian Qualifying Round. Besides it, he also secured gold medal in the National Weightlifting Championship. Imran Khan bagged two gold medals in the National Rowing Championship. Hafiz Irfan won the Chief Minister Inter-collegiate Badminton Championship and National Juniors Badminton Championship. Khawaja Ammar, popularly known as the Hulk Hogan of GCU, out-muscled his rivals in the Inter-Universities Bodybuilding Championship and won the title of 'Mr Pakistan Universities 2010. He also won the silver medal in the National Senior Bodybuilding Championship. Waqas Malik represented Pakistan in five international tennis championships including Fergana Cup, and 25th Damascus International Junior Tennis Championship. Altaf Hussain Shah bagged the gold medals in the javelin throw at the Inter-Universities Athletics Championship. Hafiz M. Safdar, titled the Usain Bolt of GCU, was declared the fastest man of the Pakistan Universities. He received gold medal in the 200m event in the Inter-University Athletics Championship 2010. Usman Hameed was declared the Best Mountaineer in the Inter-University Mountaineer Championship. Irfan Zaman scored double century and helped GCU in piling up the highest score by any team in the Inter-Collegiate Cricket Championship with his fine knock of 228 runs. He has also played Lahore region U-19 cricket. Aqib Hanif was declared runner-up in the Inter-University Squash Championship. Ghazanfar was declared the best goal keeper in Lahore Board for the year 2010. However, Adnan Nawaz titled the Best Footballer in Lahore Board for the session 2010. Muhammad Umer Farooq secured second position in the Inter-University Rifle Shooting Championship. Khalil Mir was declared the Best Gymnast in the Punjab Games. Saad Ali Hassan was honored for his overall participation in almost all the games. He won silver medals both in rowing and weightlifting besides giving satisfactory performances in volleyball, judo, wrestling and handball. Waqas Zulfiqar won the Bronze Medal in the National Boxing Championship. GCU pace bowler Asfand Meharn picked up 15 wickets in the Lahore Board Cricket Tournament and his excellent bowling spells helped GCU lift the Champions Trophy in the Lahore. Azhar Abbas received the Gold Medal in the Lahore Board Inter-collegiate Athletics Championship. The Sports Board especially acknowledged the efforts of its hockey players who brought the trophy of the Inter-University Hockey Championship to GCU. In his message, GCU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalid Aftab congratulated the sportsmen on their achievements, saying sports were considered an integral part of physical fitness and mental training. He also prayed for the bright future of these students. GCU Director Sports Khadim Ali Khan said that Pakistani sportsmen were highly talented and all they needed was opportunities, facilities and guidance. Old Ravians also appreciated the perforce of GCU sportsmen.
