LAHORE - 'Illegal alterations in the original design of Lahore Ring Road were aimed at connecting the road with Jaati Umra while the alterations were made on the instructions of Nawaz Sharif last year after his aerial survey of the project, alleged Opposition Leader in Punjab Assembly, Ch Zaheerud Din. He levelled these accusations during in an informal chat with media at the residence of senior PML-Q Leader Ch Pervaiz Elahi here on Monday. Zaheer strongly condemned the Punjab Chief Ministers recent remarks regarding the LRR design approved by the earlier government and termed them as devoid of common sense. He claimed that alterations in the original design of LRR had put an unbearable financial overload of Rs 21 billion on the already impoverished people of the Punjab. He said that the LRR design approved by the previous provincial government was prepared on most-modern and scientific lines keeping in view the requirements of the present and future burgeoning vehicular traffic needs of the City. The PML-Q leader said that for the LRR design, Ch Pervaiz Elahis government had hired the services of an eminent professor of the Michigan State University, who had already designed successful ring roads in the United States. He informed that prior to the final design approval of LRR, a six-month survey of the City traffic was carried out, and NASAs space satellite images were also employed at the designing stage.
