LAHORE The Opposition of the Punjab Assembly on Monday boycotted important proceedings of budget when the Treasury smoothly got through with the demands for grants while no cut motions considered primarily because of the Samina-Shaikh row on Saturday and Sunday last. The Treasury, including Chief Minister Punjab , made two futile attempts at reconciliation and bringing the Opposition back to the floor, but talks failed when the Treasury declined to send Shaikh Alauddin out of the House even for the concluding speech of Finance Minister Tanvir Ashraf Kaira. The Opposition was said to be equally unbending when it did not send even a single member for symbolic representation. On the other hand, it is being considered that the Opposition will boycott the proceedings on Tuesday (today) as well till the Shaikh is shown exit. However, certain Q-League members do want to participate in the Assembly proceedings 'since we are answerable to people and do not want to waste a golden opportunity to grill the Treasury for fiscal foul ups. On Monday, the PA approved all the demands for grants because of the boycotting PML-Q irked by Sheikhs adverse remarks about its member Samina Khawar Hayyat, while the latter is better known for creating such controversies, which attract media attention. One cannot forget cat fight in front of the television cameras with a PPP female MPA from Rawalpindi, furious skirmish with Minister Prisons Ch Abdul Ghafoor his membership suspended for seven days then Waris Kalo had to eat humble pie at Saminas hands, and now twice in this session Shaikh Alauddin is her target. Earlier, she has remained in the media for favouring controversial permission of polygamy to married men. Believably so, this is not the end of the game, but the questions are: How many important proceedings and sessions will the Opposition boycott? How many crucial issues will be brushed under the carpet because she is 'speaking her heart out and giving rise to controversies? How many more MPAs will suffer at her hands because of crispy comments uttered in bad taste? And lastly, will the Q-League show its responsibility towards the people of doing its due? Speaker Rana Iqbal and Shahbaz Sharif appealed to the protesting Opposition to join the proceeding. The Speaker twice persuaded the Opposition through ministers, and reminded the Opposition of its constitutional duty to take part in the proceedings as representatives of the people. He constituted a committee comprising Ministers Dost Muha-mmad Khosa, Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman and Malik Nadeem Kamran to bring back the opposition members to the house, but they failed. Then, he sought help of the Law Minister, who did not have any solution either. However, Rana Sanaullah opined that the Opposition wanted to dictate terms. Oppositions stance is not in line with the parliamentary traditions, he observed, while requesting the Speaker to continue the proceedings since 'the time is precious. Shahbaz Sharif even interrupted the wind up speech of Finance Minister Tanvir Ashraf Kaira and requested the Speaker to call back the Opposition members. The Speaker again constituted another committee comprising Senior Minister Raja Riaz Ahmed and Dost Muhammad Khan Khosa. On return, Raja Riaz told the House that the Opposition had left the premises soon after the arrival of the CM. Hence this ended an important day without Opposition on the Floor.
