ISLAMABAD - A Cardiac Center that is under construction at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for the last five years, again has been given extension for the completion till December this year. The projected under construction by the Public Works Department (PWD) was supposed to be completed in 2010 but delays in the release of funds by the government caused delays in its completion. According to information the PWD also overspent nearly Rs 30 million on the construction of the building exceeding from the actual allocated amount for the construction. An inquiry has also been ordered by the Secretary of the Ministry of Capital Administration and Development Imtiaz Inayat Elahi to probe the reasons of overspending and alleged corruption. The project started in 2007 was allocated nearly Rs 1200 million out of which Rs 700 million have been spent on the construction and rest of the amount is expected to be released in July. The 100-bed centre would add state-of-the-art facilities for cardiac care to the hospital and would lessen the patients overload on the hospital. When contacted, PIMS Executive Director Prof. Mahmood Jamal informed TheNation that the government has pledged to release the remaining outstanding dues in the new financial year for the project and PWD will handover the Center after completion to the hospital administration by the end of this year to be made it functional.
