RAWALPINDI - An election tribunal on Thursday directed the returning officer to furnish a complete record of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s candidate and former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi who has filed nomination papers for Rawalpindi’s NA-57 constituency.

The ET directed the RO to submit the record of candidature of Abbasi by June 23. The ET also summoned Abbasi in person for the hearing.

The ET comprised of Lahore High Court Rawalpindi bench judge Ibad ur Rehman Lodhi sought the record from the RO on applications of Masood Ahmed Abbasi and Muhammad Umar challenging the candidature of the former premier to contest election from the NA-57 constituency.

The petitioners have contended that Abbasi, being the prime minister, had released Rs1 billion to his son under the Umrah package after which his son had sent scores of people of his father’s constituency to perform Umrah at the expense of public money. They said the ex-premier also supported the anti-Pakistan interviews of his party chief Nawaz Sharif. They said Abbasi tried to dent the national security by supporting Sharif.

Separately, the ET also issued notices to PTI candidate for NA-67 Fawad Chaudhry, the ECP and the RO and asked to submit Fawad’s nomination record by June 23. The ET issued the notices in response to a plea filed Syed Fakhar Abbas, who has alleged that Chaudhry did show his tax returns.

Meanwhile, the ECP dismissed appeals of two candidates for PP-9 and PP-14 against the rejection of their nomination papers by ROs. The ROs had rejected the nomination papers of Raja Anjum Hafeez and Shakila Shaukat Bhatti for being dual nationals.
