Save us, Messiah

There were suggestions in the media recently that CJ Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry should now ponder whether he should be joining the judiciary or staying out to work from outside as he could actually remain a symbol of independent judiciary. I think, if he had to stay out, he might as well have resigned two years ago when he was asked to do so. He would not like to be an outside 'advisor' especially when he can do so more effectively by being at helm. Our officialdom is not yet mature enough to benefit from the outside advice. Orders and directives from within are needed to goad them into action. Since the CJP became a part of our judicial system a long time back in Quetta when he started appearing as an ordinary lawyer in the lower courts at the district level before working his way to the top, I am sure he knows intimately what all goes on in and around our courts and what afflicts our judicial system. He is, therefore, the best person to be the Messiah of our judiciary. Now that the judiciary has become independent with his restoration, let us request him to make it honest' and poor friendly also. -COL (Retd) RIAZ JAFRI, Rawalpindi, via e-mail, march 17.
