LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has presided over a high-level meeting here on Friday which considered various proposals for the transportation of imported coal from Karachi through railways for power projects.
Provincial Minister for Minerals Sher Ali Khan, General Manager Operation Railways, Chairman Karachi Port Trust, Additional Chief Secretary Energy, Secretary Minerals, Chairman Punjab Investment Board, Chairman Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park and concerned officials were present.
Addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister said that Punjab government is working on a big project of generation of electricity from coal. He said that coal power generation can help in controlling energy crisis to a large extent within a short period of time. He said that in order to implement coal based power projects in Punjab a system is being evolved for the transportation of imported coal from the ports to the sites of the proposed power plant. The Chief Minister directed that a modern system of supply of imported coal should be evolved and the model of public-private partnership should also be considered for this purpose. Shahbaz Sharif said that all possible steps are being taken to rid the country of serious energy problem and power projects are being implemented expeditiously.
He expressed the hope that sincere efforts of the government will succeed and the problem of shortage of electricity will be overcome due to which industrial process and economic activities will accelerate while new job opportunities will be created. Additional Chief Secretary Energy gave a detailed briefing regarding the system of supply of imported coal to coal power plants.
