Drop zone

Guptill was dropped on four when Marlon Samuels spilt a straightforward catch at square leg off Jerome Taylor's third ball of the innings. It was an echo of Rahat Ali's drop of Shane Watson in quarter-final between Australia and Pakistan in Adelaide when the batsman was also on four.

30,000 birthday wishes

Grant Elliott had a birthday to remember as 30,000 fans sang "Happy Birthday" to the South African-born player who turned 36. "Maaaartin Guptill," clap, clap, clap. This later chant reverberated around a jam-packed Cake Tin as he stood on the verge of a double-hundred.

Up and over

Guptill became just the second man to hit the ball onto the roof of the Westpac Stadium with a giant six, one of the 11 he hit in the game. He raised a celebratory two fingers towards the dug-out where batting coach Craig McMillan, the only other man to do it, was watching in admiration.

Dan's a flying man

Daniel Vettori took a leaping, one-handed catch down on the third man boundary to dismiss Samuels. One fan even threw him an orange shirt to wear -- a company is offering a share of a million dollar jackpot for spectators who take a one-handed catch while wearing one of the shirts.
